Academic Leadership Speaker Series banner

This series will bring university administrators to campus who can share their career trajectories and experiences in transitioning from faculty to administration. Topics include discussions of what administrative positions entail, the challenges and rewards of pursuing a career in administration, and student engagement, particularly of first-generation and students of color.

  • Who

    This faculty development opportunity will be open to all faculty on campus and is offered to encourage women and faculty from historically underrepresented groups to consider a career trajectory in university leadership.

  • Session Format

    Zoom meeting with faculty; 40-45 minute presentation with an additional 30-40 minutes for questions.

Dr. Nancy "Rusty" Barceló's headshotDr. Nancy “Rusty” Barceló, former President of Northern New Mexico College (retired)
Thursday, February 18, 2021, 3-4pm PST

Dr. Barceló brought a national reputation and a 30-year career in higher education at the university level to Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), where she served as President from 2010 until her retirement. From 2001 to 2006 Dr. Barceló served as Vice President and Vice Provost for Minority Affairs and Diversity at the University of Washington and from 1996 to 2001 she served as Associate Vice President for Multicultural and Academic Affairs at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Barceló held various positions at the University of Iowa from 1975 to 1996 including Assistant Provost and Assistant Dean with the Office of the Provost.

Dr. Barceló received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from Chico State College, her Master of Arts degree in Recreational Education from the University of Iowa, and her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Higher Education Administration.

Dr. Curry's headshotDr. Keith Curry, President of Compton College

Dr. Keith Curry has adopted a slogan, “Every student is a success story.” He believes every community college student can be successful with the right academic and student support services. Dr. Curry is the President/CEO of the Compton College and Compton Community College District (CCCD). Before becoming the permanent CEO, Dr. Curry served as interim CEO of the Compton Community College District for two years. Additionally, he served as the El Camino College Compton Center dean of student services from March 2006 to June 2011.

Dr. Curry has received several awards for his achievements, including the Harry Buttimer Distinguished Administrator Award. It is the most prestigious award given by the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA), paying tribute to those administrators who demonstrate integrity, principle, compassion, strength in leadership, and who have made significant contributions to the college district and community.

Dr. González's headshotDr. Deena González, Provost at Gonzaga University
Tuesday, April 13, 2021, 3-4pm PST

Dr. González was named Gonzaga’s first provost and senior vice president in the spring of 2019. Previous leadership roles include associate provost for faculty affairs and professor in the department of Chicana/o, Latina/o studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), as well as chair of the department of Chicana/o studies, which she led through its first formal review and accreditation. 

Named one of the 50 most important living women historians in the United States by the Sophia Smith Radcliffe/Harvard project, she was honored at a special session of the Organization of American Historians (OAH) in Philadelphia in April, 2019 for her work mentoring historians.

Born and raised in New Mexico (14th generation), Dr. González earned a bachelor’s degree in history/anthropology/liberal arts from New Mexico State University and both a master’s degree and doctorate in history from the University of California, Berkeley. She was the first Chicana to complete the doctoral program.
