Bi-weekly workshop/book-discussions based on Tools for Teaching.
In Spring, 2009, we purchased a copy of Barbara Davis' 2009 edition of Tools for Teaching for every Channel Islands' faculty member. If you have not yet received your copy, notify ed.nuhfer@csuci.edu, and we'll make arrangements to place one in your hands.
Tools for Teaching is a resource well-suited to providing solutions and enhancements to your classes with minimal time investment. Unlike other good resources, which require a cover-to-cover read or intensive search to find exactly the help that you seek, the author structered this book into 61 short, content-rich topical chapters that arise from challenges that teachers face daily in their classrooms. The chapters are heavily referenced with current resources, and some of our own Channel Islands folks have contributed to this cited literature.
We'll use this resource during the coming academic year by scheduling open book discussions based on chapter themes. This offers opportunity to produce a good set of resources that prove useful and effective at our Channel Islands Campus—an institution like few others.
The best trial-by-fire tested resources come from our own faculty. For example, a scheduled discussion might be on Chapter 2, "The Comprehensive Course Syllabus." If you have constructed a syllabus that works particularly well with students here, share that. Send that as an attachment in a .doc file to the Director of Faculty Development, ed.nuhfer@csuci.edu. If possible, add a small write-up that explains why this works particularly well here. We'll post your contribution under a topical heading identical with that chapter at a faculty resource web site. If you know of a colleague who has constructed such a document, ask her/him to furnish it too. It would be terrific if by the end of a year or two, we had produced a set of proven resources for ourselves that correspond to every chapter in that book.
